Slovenia: Triglav National Park Road Trip

First things first, if you haven’t read my previous Slovenia posts, where have you been?! I talked about our overall trip here and a full guide to Lake Bohinj here. Lake Bohinj was our base for our 4 nights in the stunning Triglav National Park but it wasn’t all we got out to see! This post will talk about some of the other places that you should pop on your travel wish list, most of which we got to in 1 day on an epic road trip!
Lake Bled

Lake Bled is probably the most well-known spot in Slovenia and is definitely the most touristy place we went to. Nonetheless, its waters are absolutely magical and definitely a must visit destination if you’re visiting Slovenia. If you’re in full tourist mode then get a boat out to the church, or go to the top of the castle on the shore. I, however, was more interested in climbing to a viewpoint of course! There are an abundance of blog posts detailing the hikes to Ojstrica, Velika Osojnica and Mala Osojnica so you can find plenty of info if you would like to follow in my footsteps. The first hike to Ojstrica was tough but of course I wanted more so struggled on to Mala Osojnica! I’m glad I did because I definitely upgraded the view in doing so.

Lake Jasna
Lake Jasna was the first stop on our road trip day – we’d done Lake Bled already to give us a bit more breathing room on the road trip. It’s actually a fake lake with beautiful emerald water. Unfortunately it was a little cloudy when we were there but the water was still really bright! Also at this spot is a river bed with that teal water, as the famous Soca River is.
Vrsic Pass
Down the road from Lake Jasna, you start winding up and climbing altitude on the Vrsic Pass. At the top you’ll get a stunning view down the valley but there are also plenty of lovely places to stop on the way up. We had the best lunch stop ever!
Soca River/Valley
After heading back down the other side of the pass, you drive along the iconic Soca River with plenty of tempting pulling over spots like this gorgeous one here.

Slap Virje
Is life even real? This place was only just on my radar (after extensive research!) but I’m so glad we made the trip here. It is truly magical but also didn’t seem particularly popular so was nice and quiet to enjoy the peace.

Sotocje
After a long, winding drive back from Slap Virje, we stopped off at Sotocje for a small detour. Sotocje is a ‘beach’ which is at the joining of two rivers. Recurring theme but the water is just unreal here, Triglav National Park really is a place not on Earth! We didn’t spend long here because it was the end of our day but it would be a great place to hang out for an afternoon if you’re staying nearby.
Other gorges (Vintgar and Tolmin)
We decided not to fully burn ourselves out so didn’t cram these extra sites in, but Vintgar Gorge (near Lake Bled) and Tolmin Gorge. From pictures they do look impressive so do make time for a visit if you’re interested!
So that was the Triglav National Park! Obviously there are so many more places to see but with only a few days I think we didn’t do too bad a job. Please do let me know in the comments if there are any other must-see areas for if I ever make it back!
