A Short Break to Luxembourg

Recently (although doesn't feel very recently now!) we had a gloriously sunny bank holiday in the UK. Thankfully it was also glorious in Luxembourg, because that's where we were!

We spent our 4 nights camping on the river Sure, which honestly was pure bliss. We both loved waking up and being able to zip open our tent to see the river (and rowdy ducks) right there greeting us. It was also really nice to just chill and cook our campsite meals in the evenings. In the rest of this post I'll tell you about all of the lovely spots in Luxembourg that we squeezed into our short trip, and that you probably don't know about!

Vianden

We spent our whole first day chilling at our campsite on the river, so on day 2 we set off exploring. We had bought a 2 day Luxembourg Card so got on the bus to Ettelbruck and changed onto the bus to Vianden. It was another gloriously sunny and hot day and we headed in pursuit of the cable car station!

It was included in the Luxembourg Card and was a bit of a novelty to be going up the hill in a cable car! Once at the top there was actually a downhill walk to get to our destination - Vianden Castle.

This was another thing included as part of our card and not something we would usually spend money on to go inside but you definitely get an experience that you can't get from only the outside, including some gorgeous views of the valley.

The Moselle Valley - Grevenmacher

The Moselle Valley is a wine region close to the border with Germany, and features the impressive Moselle river. We chose to visit the town of Grevenmacher and rent bikes from the campsite in town (included in the Luxembourg card). It was soooo hot but nice to be on the bikes, and we cycled north first but then realised that we were getting further away from the river so turned around and cycled south, which was the winner!

We had been planning on wine tasting (also included) but we had a late start to the day so didn't have a chance. We had plenty of wine drinking opportunities at our campsite so we didn't lose out too much!

Luxembourg City

A very short visit to Luxembourg's capital is all we managed to fit in but although short, it was sweet! If you're also visiting, put Chemin de la Corniche ('Europe's most beautiful balcony'), the Grand Ducal Palace and Place de la Constitution on your list. There are SO many more spots to visit in this city and it also looked like a really chill place to enjoy a nice dinner so don't take that as an extensive list!

Overall, I think Luxembourg really surprised us. It was really fun going to the supermarkets and it was surprisingly cheap. Another surprise was all of the languages. For such a tiny country there are so many languages floating around! Aside from the official ones, our campsite seemed to operate mainly in Dutch - perhaps because of the large proportion of Belgian tourists.

Whether it's Luxembourg or elsewhere, this trip reminded me how nice it is to be among nature and how relaxing that can be (if camping is your thing!).

As always, check out my Instagram for more pictures, if you haven't had enough here!
